The Betty Golde Smith Library Practicum

The Betty Golde Smith Library at St. Louis Psychoanalytic Institute offers a practicum for library science students to provide opportunities to:

1. Participate in a variety of activities and situations that are part of the professional librarian’s work.
2. Be involved in professional problem-solving and decision-making processes.
3. Develop professional self-management skills.
4. Combine the theory of information and library science with on-the-job practice.

Library Practicum Program Components

1. Library User Contact

The library practicum student will have regular and on-going contact with library users, including faculty, students, analysts, board members, administration, Institute members, and staff.

2. Supervision

The Institute librarian will direct and guide the activities of the library practicum student on a day-to-day basis in consultation with the student’s educational advisors.

3. Conferences

Conferences with the library practicum student and the supervising librarian(s) may take place upon the request of the student and/or the supervising librarian(s) or at the time of a scheduled site visit.

4. Facilities

The library practicum student will be provided with a computer work station in the library. A small classroom can be scheduled for use during conferences and site visits. Kitchen facilities are also available to the student.

Eligibility

Eligible students will be currently enrolled in a library science program.
