Awakenings is a moving story of memories, loss, and life rediscovered. For more than forty years, thousands succumbed to a mysterious global pandemic, sleeping sickness (encephalitis lethargica), rendering them as immobile and voiceless as living statues.
Dr. Sacks encountered these patients in the mid 1960’s when he first came to the US to work at Beth Abraham Chronic Care Hospital in the Bronx. Sacks experimented with the new Parkinson’s treatment, L-Dopa to bring his patients back to life…but with the challenge of finding their place in a now-unfamiliar world.
The presentation will run approximately 40-45 minutes with Q&A time after.
