Herbert S. Schiele Clinic Training Program

Is private practice in your future?
The Schiele Clinic can help you get there.

Our 12-month training program offers an intensive learning experience in individual psychodynamic psychotherapy. You will develop your clinical skills while building a caseload you can take with you into private practice. This is an unpaid training position—but the value is substantial.

At the heart of the training experience is the weekly case conference—a space where trainees present clinical work, ask hard questions, and learn alongside peers and experienced clinicians. You will observe how seasoned psychoanalysts and psychotherapists think through complex clinical material in real time, and you will gain exposure to a wider range of cases than your own caseload could ever provide. These sessions model the kind of ongoing professional consultation that defines psychodynamic practice throughout a career. Add weekly individual supervision with an experienced clinician who provides dedicated mentorship throughout the year, and you are getting the kind of training most programs cannot match.

Most training programs charge for supervision. We do not. For postgraduates pursuing licensure, we provide all the supervision hours you need at no cost—a benefit worth thousands of dollars.

Who Should Apply

Graduate students in social work, psychology, counseling, psychiatry, or postgraduates working toward licensure.

Program Tracks

  • Basic Program (1 year): For graduate students in clinical master’s or doctoral programs ready for intensive field placement (concentration/practicum/internship). ~20 hours/week.
  • Advanced Program (2 years): For postgraduates working toward licensure. ~20-35 hours/week. Supervision hours for licensure are provided at no cost.

What You Will Do

  • Provide psychodynamic psychotherapy to 8-12 individuals weekly
  • Conduct intake assessments and staff the Clinic’s intake line
  • Maintain electronic medical records, bill clients, and collect fees—just like running your own private practice
  • Attend weekly individual supervision (scheduled at times that work for you and your supervisor)
  • Attend weekly Clinic case conference/meetings Tuesdays 12-2pm (required—plan to block this time)

What You Will Gain

  • Intensive one-on-one supervision from experienced psychoanalysts and psychotherapists
  • Access to Institute lectures, seminars, and the Betty Golde Smith Library
  • Opportunity to transfer your caseload to private practice after completing the program
  • Become part of our referral network after establishing your practice

Time Commitment

  • 12-month program cycle (rolling start dates)
  • Tuesdays 12-2pm blocked for Clinic meetings (non-negotiable)

Placement Sites

  • Schiele Clinic
  • Casa de Salud Mental Health Collaborative (bilingual Spanish/English preferred)

Joel Thomas

“I began the Practicum program as a way simply to work toward my license, but the Practicum offers more than clinical hours and supervision. I am surrounded by committed professionals who support my development by helping me deepen my understanding of psychodynamic psychotherapy through their wisdom, experience and encouragement.”

— Joel Thomas, former Practicum student, now in Private Practice
