Description
This course is useful for beginning clinicians and more experienced ones – especially those not familiar with the many developmental theories/clinical approaches. As Winnicott noted, a developmental awareness must be ‘in your bones’ in the clinical encounter. The course will also highlight how various psychoanalytic developmental theories influence each other. A developmental framework is foundational to an understanding of the psychoanalytic clinical process. The following will be discussed – as well as more contemporary perspectives:
- Drive theory (Freud, Abraham)
- Ego Psychology (Hartmann, Anna Freud)
- Object Relations (Winnicott, Klein)
- Life Cycle (Erikson)
- Theories of the Self (Stern, Kohut)
- Attachment Theory (Bowlby, Ainsworth)
Course Objectives
- Participants will be able to compare and describe the commonalities and differences of theoretical positions.
- Participants will be able to list the fundamentals that remain the same within classical and more contemporary theoretical perspectives in both theory and technique.
- Participants will be able to explain the necessary components of establishing a working or therapeutic alliance.Participants will be able to discuss examples of their use of countertransference as observed and experienced in the psychotherapeutic encounter.
- Participants will be able to discuss examples of their use of countertransference as observed and experienced in the psychotherapeutic encounter.
