AlmostHome Psychotherapy Program

A placement site of the Herbert S. Schiele Clinic Training Program

Want to make a difference in the lives of young mothers?
The AlmostHome placement may be for you.

AlmostHome provides resources and support for young mothers to empower them to build better lives for themselves and their children. Through a collaboration between AlmostHome and the Herbert S. Schiele Clinic Training Program, clinical trainees have the opportunity to provide psychodynamic psychotherapy to AlmostHome members (young mothers ages 16–21) as part of their training placement.

This is not a separate training program. AlmostHome is a placement site within the Schiele Clinic Training Program. Candidates who are accepted into the training program and demonstrate interest in working with this population may be considered for the AlmostHome placement. Placement requires approval from the Schiele Clinic Medical Director and a successful interview with AlmostHome leadership.

About AlmostHome

AlmostHome is a residential program located at 3200 St. Vincent Avenue in St. Louis. The organization serves young mothers who are working to build stability and independence for themselves and their children. Members live on-site and participate in programming designed to support their growth as parents and individuals. As a clinical trainee placed at AlmostHome, you will become part of this community—not just as a therapist, but as a consistent, trusted presence in the lives of the members you serve. To learn more about AlmostHome and its mission, visit almosthomestl.org.

What You Will Do at AlmostHome

  • Provide at least 4 hours of psychotherapy per week to AlmostHome members, primarily in person on-site (with some flexibility for telehealth when needed)
  • Maintain a caseload of up to 10 program members
  • Be a consistent presence at AlmostHome by spending time on-site regularly, building genuine rapport with members, staff, and volunteers beyond the therapy room
  • Maintain electronic medical records for everyone on your caseload
  • Attend AlmostHome program meetings (Tuesdays at 10:00 AM)
  • Attend weekly Schiele Clinic case conference/meetings Tuesdays 12-2pm (hybrid)
  • Attend weekly individual supervision (scheduled at times that work for you and your supervisor)

Tuesdays are a full commitment—plan to block the day for AlmostHome and Clinic meetings. Hours worked on-site at AlmostHome may be spread out over the rest of the week, including evenings and weekends. There is private space available on-site for therapy sessions.

What You Will Gain

  • Intensive one-on-one supervision from experienced psychoanalysts and psychotherapists
  • Exposure to and training in two therapeutic practice settings, preparing you to provide services at a nonprofit agency as well as in a private practice
  • A steady client base of up to 10 program members to meet with regularly
  • The opportunity to staff the Schiele Clinic intake line to gain experience screening individuals in need of therapy and matching them with an appropriate service provider
  • The opportunity to apply for a second year in the program to begin or continue earning supervision and clinical hours for professional licensure
  • Access to Institute lectures, seminars, and the Betty Golde Smith Library
  • Opportunities to attend Community Education events hosted by the Institute at no cost
  • Access to the Institute’s 40 faculty members, many of whom have been practicing in the field for over 30 years and serve as clinical supervisors
  • Become part of our referral network after establishing your practice

Who Should Apply

The ideal candidate understands that building trust with the members at AlmostHome goes far beyond the four walls of the therapy room—building rapport with members and their children is as important as the time spent providing therapy. Candidates must demonstrate commitment to providing culturally competent care through an equitable and inclusive lens.

Candidates must be graduate students in psychology, social work, or counseling, or individuals earning hours toward professional licensure in these fields.

How to Apply

The AlmostHome placement is available through the Herbert S. Schiele Clinic Training Program. To be considered, apply to the training program and indicate your interest in the AlmostHome placement. If the Clinic team determines you may be a strong fit, you will be invited to interview with AlmostHome leadership. Acceptance requires approval from both the Schiele Clinic and AlmostHome.

APPLY TO THE TRAINING PROGRAM

Apply at least 6 months before your preferred start date.
