Executive Director Job Description
The Executive Director is a member of the Executive Team responsible for the successful management of the organization according to the mission and the strategic direction set by the Faculty and Board of Directors. This position reports to the President of the Institute and carries the following responsibilities:
Leadership
· Assist the Faculty and Board of Directors in developing a strategic plan to guide the organization
· Identify, assess, and inform the Faculty and Board of Directors of internal and external issues that affect the organization
· Foster effective teamwork between the Faculty, Board, Executive Director and staff
· Demonstrate commitment to equity and inclusiveness
· Represent the organization in conjunction with the President, Vice President, Dean and Board Chair to enhance the organization’s community profile
Financial planning and management
· Direct and implement all fundraising activities
· Work with staff, Faculty, and the Board Budget and Finance Committee to prepare a comprehensive and transparent budget
· Work with the Board to secure adequate funding for the operation of the organization
· Ensure that sound bookkeeping and accounting procedures are followed
· Administer the funds of the organization according to the approved budget, monitor monthly cash flow, and report any variances to the President.
· Provide the Faculty and Board with comprehensive, regular reports on the revenues and expenditure of the organization
· Ensure that the organization complies with all legislation covering taxation and withholding payments
Operational planning and management
· Develop operational plans which incorporate goals and objectives towards the strategic direction of the organization
· Ensure the operation of the organization meets the expectations of its students, clients, Faculty, Board, and funders
· Oversee the efficient and effective day-to-day operation of the organization
· Draft policies for the approval of the Faculty and Board and prepare procedures to implement the organizational policies; review existing policies on an annual basis and recommend changes to the Board as appropriate
· Ensure that personnel, student, client, donor, and volunteer files are securely stored, and privacy/confidentiality is maintained
Program planning and management
· Work with the Faculty to ensure that the programs and services offered by the organization contribute to and reflect the priorities of the organization’s mission.
· Monitor the day-to-day delivery of the programs and services of the organization to maintain or improve quality
· Oversee the planning, implementation, execution, and evaluation of special projects
Community relations/advocacy
· Communicate with stakeholders to keep them informed of the work of the organization and to identify changes in the community served by the organization
· Establish good working relationships and collaborative arrangements with community groups, universities, professional organizations, funders, and other organizations to help achieve the goals of the organization
Human resources planning and management
· Determine staffing requirements for organizational management and program delivery
· Oversee the implementation of the human resources policies, procedures and practices including the development of job description for all staff
· Establish a positive, healthy, and safe work environment in accordance with all appropriate legislation and regulations
· Recruit, interview, and select staff that have the right technical and personal abilities to help further the organization’s mission
· Welcome and support staff who bring diverse experiences, backgrounds, and perspectives
· Ensure that all staff receives an orientation to the organization and that appropriate training is provided
· Implement a performance management process for all staff which includes monitoring the performance of staff on an on-going basis and conducting an annual performance review
· Coach and mentor staff to ensure the success of each staff member
· Discipline and release staff when necessary and in accordance with Institute policies and procedures
Risk management
· Identify and evaluate the risks to the organization’s clients, staff, management, volunteers, property, finances, goodwill, and image and implement measures to control risks
· Ensure that the Board of Directors and the organization have appropriate and adequate insurance coverage
Qualifications
· At least 3-5 years Executive Director experience at a nonprofit
· Experience with organizational management, finance, and fundraising, team building, and working with boards
· Degree in nonprofit management, business management, fundraising or relevant experience
· Proven track record of fundraising, donor relations and acquisition.
· Demonstrated leadership skills to inspire, empower, and develop staff and volunteers to achieve strategic organizational goals
· Experience developing and managing a budget and performing business and program analysis within an organization of a similar or greater size and complexity ($600K-$1M)
· Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations
